We must fight spam for the same reason we fight crime: not because we are naive enough to believe that we will ever stamp it out, but because we do not want the kind of world that results when no one stands against crime.  - Geoffrey Welsh

Subject: Genachowski: The Need For Speed Message-ID: <p06240828cc7f035e4bb4@[10.0.1.8]> The Need For Speed JULIUS GENACHOWSKI Sunday, September 16 TechCrunch Editor's Note: This guest post was written by Julius Genachowski, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. Prior to his FCC appointment, Genachowski was Chief of Business Operations and before that General Counsel at IAC/InterActiveCorp; Special Advisor at the private equity firm General Atlantic; and co-founder of the technology incubator LaunchBox Digital. This week's iPhone announcement and last week's release of the new Kindle Fire, Windows 8/Nokia Phone, and Droid RAZR by Google/Motorola offer the latest evidence that, over the past few years, the U.S. has regained global leadership in key areas of communications technology. These high-powered devices, and the demands they place on our broadband networks, underscore a critical challenge. To ensure the U.S. is at the forefront of the next wave of Internet innovation, we need to drive continued improvements in our wired and wireless broadband infrastructure - super-fast, high-capacity, and ubiquitous broadband networks. To risk the colloquial, we feel the need - the need for speed. As Tom Friedman and others have written, in this flat global economy a strategic bandwidth advantage will help keep the U.S. as the home and most desired destination for the world's greatest innovators and entrepreneurs. ... http://techcrunch.com/2012/09/16/the-need-for-speed/

Lee Ars Technica Sept 18 2012 A coalition of liberal advocacy groups has announced plans to challenge AT&T's policy of blocking FaceTime video chat over its cellular network. AT&T has insisted that the policy does not raise network neutrality concerns, characterizing the uproar over the policy as "another knee-jerk reaction" by the consumer groups. Three of those groups-Free Press, Public Knowledge, and the New America Foundation's Open Technology Institute-are planning to make the knee-jerking official with a formal complaint to the Federal Communications Commission. AT&T customers have always been able to use FaceTime over WiFi networks. Under AT&T's new policy, announced last month, users will also be able to use FaceTime with its "Mobile Share" data plans. And users will be able to use other video sharing apps on non-Mobile Share data plans. But if you want to use FaceTime and you've got a non-Mobile Share data plan, you're limited to WiFi. ... http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/09/att-faces-formal-fcc-complaint-for-blocking-cellular-facetime-use/
